S-Day
You must be nice to your secretary today. Tomorrow, next week, the rest of the year, you can go back to treating her (so how many male secretaries do you know?) like dirt, but today is National Secretary Day.
And the proper thing to do is to buy your secretary a bunch of flowers to thank her for all the hard work she’s paid to do anyway.
Should you have forgotten to do so, you can stop her from ‘sulking’ by calling up some secretarial service who will do it for you (according to a dreadful advert on BNR Nieuwsradio this morning).
Secretary Day is a perfectly ghastly invention – probably devised by the flower industry – and says more about the clueless bosses than the intelligent women who are often the real power behind the throne.
Do they really think a bunch of flowers compensates for all those menial tasks secretaries are often expected to do, like buy flowers for the wife on their anniversary?
Is a floral arrangement adequate reward for unfailing loyalty? It’s only one step up from a pat on the head…
Surely former Businesswoman of the Year Lia van den Berg (who runs a recruitment company for, yes really, secretaries) can’t be the only one who wants National Secretary Day scrapped.
But a National Plumber’s Day, now that really would be worth a bunch of flowers.
