Romario forgets Dutch goal in list of 999

Brazilian soccer star Romario de Souza Faria, poised to score his 1,000 goal, has already reached the magic target, claims the Volkskrant on Saturday. In the list on his current club Vasco da Gama’s website, one goal is missing: the goal Romario scored against amateur club Nieuw Buinen on August 3 1990, when he was playing for PSV Eindhoven.

Other Dutch goals – five against Roden and one against Drachtster Boys – are included but not the Nieuw Buinen goal. PSV won that match 8-1, according to the Volkskrant of August 4, which included Romario’s goal in the write-up.
‘He dribbled past a couple of players and got round the keeper,’ Mans Hebels, who was a member of the Nieuw Buinen board at the time told the paper. And keeper Derk Piebes also remembers being beaten by Romario. ‘And he hit the post with a penalty’.
The Volkskrant says Romario, now 41, came to the Netherlands himself in January 2002 to check out his goal total in the pre-season warm up matches.
According to Brazilian football magazine Placar, if you only count goals in official matches, Romario is on 717, three behind Pele.
