In these days of conflict and strife it’s nice to see two diametrically opposed political parties join together for the good of mankind. And that’s mankind literally – because one of the parties is the extremely orthodox Christian SGP which has very strange ideas about women.
In this case, it obviously thinks the place of all good women is at home and hearth – or at church – on a Sunday rather than enjoying themselves at the local shopping mall.
So the SGP has teamed up with the Socialist Party and submitted a parliamentary bill to fight the ‘abuse’ of Sunday shopping laws.
Legally shops are restricted to 12 ‘shopping Sundays’ a year but local councils can get round the legislation by declaring an area a tourist destination. The SGP has found an ally in its crusade in the form of the Socialists.
The Socialists of course are on ‘the other side’ and don’t want shops to be open seven days a week to protect shop workers rather than shoppers.
The SGP and the SP? Strange bedfellows indeed. But this is politics and the more obvious SGP partner, the ChristenUnie, did not want to rock the boat while it is involved in coalition talks.
But that doesn’t mean that the issue isn’t close to their hearts, said CU leader André Rouvoet. Of course not, André. It’s just that power and glory could be more important.
