In all the fuss about the high security jail for terrorists and its living conditions, no-one appears to have asked just how suspect Samir Azzouzz managed to get his litany of complaints into the hands of the Volkskrant newspaper journalists.

Azzouzz, who has twice been found not guilty of terrorist offences, is currently on trial for the third time, this time in the so-called Piranha case. He is being held, if we are to believe his complaints, pretty well in isolation. Even contact with his lawyer is through a glass wall.
Every day he is taken from his cell to the Osdorp courtroom – so heavily guarded it is known as ‘the bunker’. Yet somehow he managed to get a hand-written letter criticising conditions in the jail to the Volkskrant.
So who helped him? The paper itself is rather coy. It just says the Azzouzz was able to smuggle the letter out during Tuesday’s court hearings. ‘We are searched intimately several times every day,’ it quotes the letter as saying. Clearly not well enough.
The surprising thing is that no-one seems to be concerned that the letter has been smuggled out of prison. We are repeatedly told what a dangerous man Azzouzz is. So why are ministers not demanding an explanation of this extraordinary breach of security?
