Marianne Vos is new cycling world champ

She is only 19 and has just begun a degree course in biomedical science, but Marianne Vos from Brabant took the world road-race cycling title in Salzburg on Saturday, adding to her national and European titles.

Vos finished the 132.9km race in three hours, 20.26 seconds ahead of Germany’s Trixi Worrack and Nicole Cooke of the UK. ‘She’s a killer,’ said Dutch team coach Johan Lammerts. ‘She just has to see the finishing line and there is no stopping her.’
In cycle-mad Holland, where the Tour de France is a major television draw, Vos is the new heroine. She can do everything, reported the Volkskrant: inline skating, speed skating, cyclo cross, track and road-racing ‘She stands out in every discipline,’ the paper said. Her performance was ‘out of this world’, said the Netherlands’ former cycling champion, Leontien van Moorsel, who took the world title for the first time in 1991. ‘Marianne has talent I never had. I’m very proud of her.’ Vos, known for her modesty and reluctance to claim the limelight, has no plans to drop out of college. ‘You can’t cycle all day long, can you?’ she said in the Volkskrant.
