Cabinet plans to develop an international ‘gas hub’, using existing gas delivery infrastructure to set up underground storage and distribution, may not benefit the economy, the government’s macro-economic forecasting agency says in Tuesday’s Trouw.

The economic affairs ministry is planning to invest billions in the project but no evidence has yet been made public to justify the project, the CPB says. Nor can anyone say if the Netherlands will be able to earn enough from gas trading to justify the investment.
The ministry has commissioned a British research group to look into the feasibility of the plans. It´s report is still some way off, but national gas group Gasunie has already given the green light to a €2bn investment in the project, the paper says.
A large part of the project involves storing gas under the Bergermeer close to Bergen, but locals are opposed and are taking their grievances to parliament later today.
