Minister angry at housing boss pay-out
Housing minister Eberhard van der Laan is planning to comment on the €1m golden handshake paid to the retiring head of the housing corporation umbrella group Aedes, the Financieele Dagblad says on Tuesday.
Van der Laan has been invited to give a speech at a conference to mark Willem van Leeuwen’s retirement on Thursday.
‘Etiquette dictates that there are no political speeches at such an event,’ the paper quotes Van der Laan as saying. ‘I will comment within the bounds of decency.’
MPs from across the political spectrum have urged Van der Laan to take a stand against the pay-out.
They are also angry at the €300,000 annual salary his successor Marc Calon will be paid for a three-day week. This is well above the limit tentatively agreed by the government and housing corporation bosses in a self-regulatory deal on public sector pay.
Van Leeuwen has worked for Aedes for 27 years and was director for 12.
